New method of evaluating the CT dose profile

The computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic radiology technique widely used that, compared to others, delivers a high dose to the patient. The conventional method of dosimetry in CT uses a 100 mm long pencil ionization chamber which measures the single slice profile integral. However, recent works have questioned the efficiency of this method and have proposed an alternative form of dose assessment which involves smaller detectors. In this work, the dose profile in a head phantom was analyzed using a semiconductor device, the phototransistor SMT OP520, and the results were compared with the standard detector. The dose profile was evaluated using different scan length (75, 100 and 150 mm). To reduce dependence angular, two devices worked as a single detector. The results show a dependence lower than the ceiling of 3% recommended and, assessing the dose profile, that it is possible to obtain details of the single slice dose profile with this electronic device and that the volume of coverage of the beam is bigger than the length of the ion chamber, in agreement with the point of view of some authors that the dosimetry current procedures may not be the most suitable.Downloads
