Abstract

This work using mathematical modeling based on batch settling tests for free sedimentation and transition regions, addresses the characterization of flocculent suspensions by equations resulting from the comparison of two velocities as functions of porosity that transfers information from velocity determined by the mathematical model to another one in form of power function with a new base, which in the initial porosity is velocity function type Richardson and Zaki modified to include the degree of flocculation. The mathematical model velocity refers to solid particles in the transition region, and it is given by an equation involving free settling velocity, acceleration wave velocity and initial porosity. The characterization parameters, including the initial porosity, obtained from the equations resulting from the comparison are determined using the free settling velocity and acceleration wave velocity, which are determined directly from experimental data involving descending interface height versus time. Thus, characterization is performed using the results of a single batch settling test for each initial concentration. The results, such as the degree of flocculation, floc density, Stokes’ velocity and floc diameter are consistent with the literature data
