Abstract

The research described provides a representation of the problems faced by students regarding the teaching of botany. The objectives of this study were to investigate the causes of the difficulties presented by elementary school students learning about plants, the factors that determine the perceptions of students are obstacles to learning this content, and find alternatives to promote scientific literacy in the classroom of botany. The research was conducted with students from 7th grade of elementary school. The reflections that allude to this study used a literature survey correlate the topic under discussion, as well as questionnaires to a sample of 57 students. Although most have an affinity for content, 59% of students had some difficulty in learning it, and yet 64% could not describe the importance of plants to their daily
lives, these results demonstrate the lack of contextualization of the content and importance of seek strategies to facilitate learning. The barriers encountered in relation to this issue are related to how botanical knowledge is presented to students in a systematic, traditional and decorative disconnected with the reality of student and unfavorable to their learning.
