Sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics related to teenage pregnancy in the county of Jeremoabo, Bahia , Brazil

This study aims to describe the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics related to adolescent pregnancy in a Family Health Unit (FHU) of the municipality of Jeremoabo/BA.This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach performed in a Family Health Unit of the said municipality.
The non-probabilistic sample intentional, amounted to 37 pregnant women and/or mothers older teenagers between 10 and 19 years of age.
The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Faculty and research AGES/BA with protocol 009/2012.
Data were collected through individual interviews with application of a semi-structured questionnaire.
In the data analysis BioEstat(5.0) was used. It was found that the average age of menarche was 12.05 years; sexarche 13.9 years; first pregnancy to 15.5 years.
Regarding socioeconomic factors, 65% live on less than minimum wage, 89% have no paid work, 73% had between 6 and 12 years of study,
92% discontinued their studies after pregnancy and / or when they became mothers. As for family dialogue, 54% reported having received counseling about sexuality,
however, 60% reported that the guidelines were only to prevent pregnancy.
Adding to the reasons why teenagers get pregnant, 54% reported a desire to have a child. It is suggested a partnership between family, school and health services that will offer
strategies for effective action on the aspects that permeate sexuality in adolescence, providing theoretical support needed for knowledge of their reproductive rights and their overall health.
