Non-HDL-cholesterol in children and adolescents

Objective: To evaluate serum Non-HDL-cholesterol (Non-HDL-c) and lipid profile in youths aged 6 to 19 years. Method: A cross-sectional and retrospective study. The variables were: total cholesterol and fractions, Non-HDL-c, triglycerides and BMI. We excluded patients with disease or drug use that alter the lipid profile and patients with triglycerides> 400mg/dl. SPSS-17 used for analysis of the variables. Results: 108 young people participated, 63 were female. In the total sample average of Non-HDL-c was 114.7 mg / dL; LDL-c and 94.9 mg / dL. There was no significant difference in the values of non-HDL-c and LDL-c between genders and age groups. In the study, LDL-c and Non-HDL-c were highly correlatedwith R = 0.864 and total cholesterol R = 0.890 and R = 0.907, respectively. The LDL-c correlated negatively with VLDL-c. But the Non-HDL-c correlated positively with VLDL-c and triglycerides. As for BMI, 3.7% were below normal, normal weight 49.1%, 23.1% overweight and 24.1% obese. Obesepatients had significantly higher levels of Non-HDL-c, VLDL-c and TG levels and lower HDL-c compared to eutrophic. Values of Non-HDL-c corresponding to the 75th and 95th percentiles were 129 and 157 mg / dL, respectively. Conclusion: Non-HDL-c had the best correlation that LDL-c with different lipid variables and was a better parameter to assess lipid in obese patients. Thus, Non-HDL-c proved to be a promising and reliable method for investigating dyslipidemia in children and adolescents.Downloads
