Abstract

Cranial trauma (CT) is responsible for a large percentual of mortality in polytraumatized patients. It also determines permanent neurological squeals in the majority. This study intends to analyze patients admitted in the emergency of the local hospital with history of CT in basal ganglia (BG). Were evaluated about age, sex, Glasgow coma scale (GCE) on  admission, causes, presentation of the injury on computerized cranial tomography (CCT), conduct established and prognosis. All patients (14) were males, with an averaging of 29 years. The GCE varied from 3 to 11, average 6. The main cause was automobilist accidents (93%). The CCT showed BG  hemorrhage in all patients. Four showed others intracranial lesions (2 cerebral contusion and 2 subdural hemorrhages). The surgical treatment was held in the 2 patients with subdural hematoma associated. On the others, conservative treatment. Nine patients survived and 5 were death. It was concluded that the CT in BG, although represent small percentage in all cases of CT, is responsible for an important morbi-mortality in polytraumatized patients.
