Identification of possible interactions of orally administered drug with food in hospitalized patients

Abstract

Currently, the evaluation of drug interactions is increasingly in importance in the clinical activity in hospitals. In this context, drug-food interactions gain prominence due the potential of causing harm to the health of hospitalized patients. Thus, this study aims to identify potential drug-food interactions of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe (HU – UFS) . The study was an observational, cross-sectional, prospective study of medical records of patients admitted to psychiatric units and clinic of the HU - UFS. 100 % of the records analyzed did not contain guidance or description of  possible interactions with diet. Each chart analysis had a mean 9,56 medicines per patient. Among the drugs used by the patients, 20 have possible interactions with foods, average drug-food interactions was 3,46. Given the above, we can infer the need for actions that promote interdisciplinary health professionals in order to detect and prevent possible drug-food interactions.
