Abstract

Watermelon is an important crop for Brazil by intensive demand of skilled manpower rural predominant profile by household production and return around 85 days compared to other vegetables. The use of growth regulators can promote seedling performance, accelerating the speed of emergence of seeds of various species. It is believed to play an important role in regulating certain aspects of the seeds and to be involved in the growth of certain fruits and other physiological phenomena. Watermelon seeds cv. Crimson Sweet were subjected to two methods of treatment with regulator: a) soaked seeds: seed soaking in regulator for 8 hours b) substrate soaked in regulating the regulators being used: salicylic acid (0; 0,5; 5; 25 and 50 μmol.L-1); putrescine (0; 50; 100; 500 and 1000 μmol.L-1) and gibberellic acid (0; 50; 100 and 500 μg.g-1).For salicylic acid and putrescine used the completely randomized factorial 2 x 5 (treatment methods x concentrations regulator) with gibberellic acid was used 2 x 4 factorial design, with four replications of 50 seeds each. The most efficient method with the use of salicylic acid was soaked substrate, together with 0, 25 and 50 µmol.L-1.The concentration 1000 µmol.L-1, putrescine had a negative effect on the roots of seedlings.50 and 100 μg.g-1 GA3 promoted further development of the seedling shoot.500 μg.g-1 GA3 had phytotoxic effect on seed and later on watermelon seedlings.
