Abstract

The present study was to evaluate the accuracy of formulas Smalian Huber and Newton in determining the volume of logs Itaúba (Mezilaurus Itauba) and see if there is significant difference between the  different scaling methods applied in different sizes of logs. Sampling was done randomly, we used four treatments for each length of logs: Witness (actual volume) Huber; Smalian, and Newton. The results revealed that there was no statistically significant difference considering the significance level α = 5% between the methods of obtaining the volume. The method of Smalian was the one who had a slight tendency to overestimate the actual volume as the increased length of the log.With this we conclude that the measurement can be performed with any method of scaling. From a practical standpoint is the most suitable method of Huber, as the statistical point of view you should use the method of Smalian, as it had the lowest standard error for all sizes of logs.
